WESTERN AUSTRALIA DEBUT FOR RUGBY UNION FOR ALL - LIFE WITHOUT BORDERS

After the success of our Senior All Abilities Program which has been established for over 2 years the Southern Lions Rugby Union Club are now offering the program to children with disabilities under 16 years of age.

I visited the Brothers Rugby Club in Queensland recently to observe their program for junior players with a disability. I was pleased to see that our program will be very similar to theirs.

The program in Queensland started with just 7 players based at the Brothers Rugby Club and now in 7 years boasts over 250 players throughout the state.

The Junior All Abilities players at the Southern Lions Rugby club will be playing a modified game geared to the needs of the individual young people participating. It will be fun but disciplined, focusing on social and emotional development as well as the skills of the game.

Each of our All Abilities players will have a "buddy" from the mainstream Junior Rugby Club who will become their mentor. The program will also give the parents of the players a social outlet one which will enable them to mix with the other parents from throughout the club.

We have been so excited with the success of the Senior All Abilities program and we can't wait to extend it to our Junior All Abilities players who come from one of the most marginalized groups within our society.

The benefits for our players with disabilities is unquestionable but we believe that our club will benefit beyond recognition.

Yours in Rugby,
