Southern Lions 7s team return from tough but enjoyable tournament in the Northern Territory.

The squad that travelled to Darwin had a big ask of them as they were seeded 12th in Division 1 at the tournament. They were drawn in Pool D which included teams like the Brumbies (as in Super Rugby Brumbies) and top sevens exponents Sunnybank, who, if the writer is not mistaken, have been previous champions at various tournaments around Australia. Day 1 saw the Lions go down 31-0 to Sunnybank, who were 26-0 at half-time. However, a brave Lions outfit restricted their more illustrious opponents to only one try in the second half. Match 2 was against the Brumbies and it was a tough encounter for our boys. However, they once again put up a brave effort, going down 46-12. Two fantastic and well worked tries were scored by the Lions in this match. The final match on day 1 against East Arnhem was well contested and one which the Southern Lions could have won. However, they were eventually defeated 26-7, despite having a surfeit of ball. Day 2 dawned hot and humid (as with every other day in Darwin. Southern Lions had drawn the Casuarina Cougars from Darwin in a knockout round. Despite playing some tremendous 7s rugby, the Lions tournament was ended by the Cougars who defeated them 15-0.

The Darwin 7s tournament was a great experience for the players and management alike and a special mention and word of thanks must go to Terry and Karen Eastwood (Managers) and Jason Levitan (Coach) who put a tremendous amount of time and effort into the tour, both beforehand and during the tour. Their work was really appreciated.
