Southern Lions u16 defeat Palmyra 26 - 5
On Saturday 12 June the Southern Lions u16 team played against Palmyra, which resulted in the Lions notching up their first league victory of the season.
Palmyra opened the scoring in the 3rd minute with a well worked try, but were unable to convert. After a period of sustained pressure, Tyler Boon crossed for the Lions, but the conversion attempt went wide of the uprights. Three minutes later, Conor Loveland found himself through a gap 50m out and after beating a number of opponents, scored under the poles. The try was converted by Jared Lamatoa. The score 12 – 5 to the Lions remained until half-time. After half-time the Lions took the match up a gear, when, after another period of sustained pressure, Andrea Ryan crashed over. This try was a result of some great support play by both backs and forwards and Andrea had worked hard to get himself into a position to take the last pass and score. Jared converted. Going 19-5 up at this stage put the Lions in a strong position and they continued to work hard, putting in some big defence to keep Palmyra scoreless in the second half. In the 26th minute, the ball went wide to right wing Michael Blackburn, who, from 50m out, beat a number of defenders on the outside to score a marvellous try a few metres in from the corner. Jared was once again on target with the conversion. The score line of 26 – 5 remained until the final whistle. The Southern Lions u16s must be congratulated on a fine team performance, characterised by strong running and great defence.
