A hard won victory in testing conditions

The U16 Blues continued their unbeaten run last Saturday. Wet through from heavy rain during the warm-up the Blues ran on to the sodden field to face the recently relegated University side. It was rugby in the traditional mould - a grinding defensive game against a tough opposition. The rain continued to fall during the first half and the wind thwarted any attempts at tactical kicking.

The Blues scored first with a penalty goal 8 minutes into the first half and followed this up with a converted try at 18 minutes. University attacked the Blues line but were held out by strong defence. The sun came out in the second half and the Blues continued to dominate, but could not convert their chances into points. Twice they were held up over the University line. The half was scoreless up until the last minute. The Blues conceded a string of penalties that brought University within range of the try-line and they crashed over for their only points.

Final score: Blues 10, University 5. Try to Matt Turnbull, conversion and penalty goal to Alex Tuvik.
