4th grade vs Curtin match report

New game, new ground, new era – Souths new training and playing facility is nearly fully operational and hopefully this game against Curtin Uni will be replicated throughout the coming seasons. After the U18s had been the first Souths team to turn out on the new fields, unfortunately going down to Palmyra, Souths 4ths took to the field. Welcoming back captain Mark Carmichael and blast from the past Jon ‘Sacka’ Bowman, confidence and a determination to do well was high.
From the off, Souths were on the attack. The controlling influence of Carmichael steered Souths and so it was no surprise that a neat grubber allowed Peter Jackson to smartly gather and dive over for an early try. Stunned into action against a club Curtin had enjoyed much success against in recent years, they came back hard contesting the breakdown with vigour. Lineouts were a struggle for Souths as Curtin spoilt well but it was the scrummage which kept them in the hunt. The Chapman brothers and Bowman won their own and stole everything else. So much ball could only lead to another try and after a some excellent hands it was Sean Hanlon who score in the corner. Penalties were traded and Curtin dragged themselves back in it before the half was out making it 12-6.

After the break and after the usual changes, Souths went against the norm and continued where they left off. New additions Dan Savalas and Geordie James made their presence felt and continued to allow Carmichael plenty of time space and ball. Camped in opposition 22, a quick change of play saw Souths queuing up with Morne Steenkamp the scorer. Curtin made more changes to try and stem the tide but even after an injury to Player Coach Chubb Chapman the Souths scrum didn’t let up with David Ingo stealing more ball against the head. The final try was just reward for Player of the day Peter Jackson. Securing ball from Sean Hanlon, he darted over almost unopposed. 22-6 to Souths and a great 2nd win of the season.
