The Pirates opened the scoring in the 7th minute with a try and conversion scored through a well worked maul from 5m out. That event seemed to galvanise the Lions defence and our boys knuckled down and worked hard to defend our line, whilst making some telling inroads into Pirates territory, coming very close to scoring on a number of occasions. The next score came in the 53rd minute with another Pirates try to take them 12-0 ahead. Pirates crossed the Lion’s line on another three occasions in the final quarter, namely in the 65th, 73rd and 81st minutes, converting two of them, one from close to the touch line. The Lions did, however, manage to score in the 79th minute where Thomas Job sliced through the defence from 30m out to dot down under the poles. He converted his own try. Thus the match finished with Mandurah winning 31 – 7. We would like to than Mike Penhaligon for providing us with a bus to transport us to Mandurah, Tony Clifton for helping out with managerial tasks, Simon Cummings for his work from the medical side of things and all the supporters who attended the match. The players must also be commended on their willingness to put in their best efforts right to the end, and, although the match was lost, they displayed great character in defence, working hard throughout.
