Southern Lions 1sts played a tough semi-final against Nedlands at Kalmunda RUFC.
The two teams were evenly matched, neither could break through and remained tied at half-time, 0-0.
Nedlands started the 2nd half well scoring first with a penalty, 3-0.
The Lions players came back hard and levelled the scores soon after through McKay, 3-3.
Souths pressed Nedlands, creating space for the outside backs, working their way into the opposition half, earning a penalty that was kicked to the corner. A clean lineout catch allowed the Lions pack to drive for the try line. Several backs joined the maul and the Nedlands forwards couldn't resist the pressure, the Hooker Towler touching down. McKay converted, 10-3 Lions.
Nedlands had their best spell after this and strong play by their forwards provided an opening out wide, the winger touched down in the corner. A strong conversion into the wind levelled the scores, 10-10.
The final 15 minutes provided both sides with opportunities to jump ahead, good defence kept Nedlands out and the upright prevented Souths retaking the lead. McKay then had, we thought, the last chance to win the game with a long distance penalty. The fine kick shaved the underside of the crossbar and the game seemed destined for extra-time.
Nedlands had other ideas and fought their way to the Lions 10m line. The referee saw a South's indiscretion and awarded a penalty. Time was up and the penalty could decide the game. The Nedland's full-back skimmed the top of the cross-bar to maintain his 100% success rate and send his team to the Grand Final.
No team deserved to lose.
Souths must now regroup for next weeks Preliminary Final away to Palmyra (Tompkins Park), kick-off at 12:30hrs
