Perth Irish provide tough opposition

Perth Irish came to Success looking for revenge after two earlier losses to the Lions in 2017.

The task undoubtedly was as big as what faced the B&I Lions against the All Blacks later in the day. And so it proved with the Lions winning convincingly to continue their superb season to date.

Lions were made to work hard at times by good Perth Irish play and will look for better performances as we move towards the finals in August.

"On Saturday the 1st side met Perth Irish for the 3rd and came out winners 45 to 17.
In attempting to challenge the boys more this week I brought in new structures at line-out and scrum time. The players attempted to work through the structures as the game developed but never really got it to go smoothly. At set piece the team struggled to get a consistent flow of ball in which to attack from and this backed with again a high penalty count made for a stop start affair. It was not what we wanted to see but it did make the game more of a contest. Perth Irish kept working hard but did get away with a lot of offside play which made ball movement very difficult.
The team turned around at half time with a lead of 26 to 5 but struggled to put Perth Irish away who were next to score to make the score 26 12 with about 25 minutes to go. In the last 25 minutes the boys scored 3 more tries of their own compared to an intercept try for Perth Irish.
Not one of our best performances but if we can be more accurate at set piece, get more depth in our support play and work a bit harder to get into position we can turn it around very quickly.
In the forwards Player of Day Scott Turnbull got through a lot of work and was effective at ruck time and was supported well by Dean Kingi, Sam Price and 2nd grade player Jason King. In the backs, Dan Cassidy finished an excellent try and produced a solid all around performance as did Joel Lamatoa and Sheldon Willan. This week it is Arks away which will be a challenge but a game the boys are looking forward to."
Congratulations to the team and management on continuing the fine season.
