Curtin Uni make Lions fight hard in 2nd half

Curtin Uni came to Southern Lions for this wet and windy Round 15 clash. Curtin Uni have been struggling with injuries and this resulted in the cancellation of the Champ B game.

Lions were ready from the kick-off and immediately had the away side under pressure. Lions aided with the breeze camped in the Curtin 22 for most of the first half . Lions dominated, scored 4 tries and fully deserved the 22-0 half time score. Lions #7 Price was guilty of giving up a try to glory chasing #8 Atthis.

Curtin Uni sucked the life out of those oranges and they can came out firing in the second half and penned Lions back for the first 20mins. The Lions defence stood strong and the away team only managed a solitary penalty.

The home team controlled the final 20mins and added 2 more tries to leave the final score 36-3. A few more tries were left on the field when breaking runners failed to find their support.

Coach Brett Fell provided the following summary of the game -

"Southern Lions 1st grade side continued on their winning way with a convincing 36 to 3 win over Curtin Uni.

Playing the 1st half at high tempo and with real accuracy the team scored 4 well deserved tries to lead 22 to 0 at the break. The score was a fair reflection of how the boys had played where the team had dominated set piece especially at scrum time allowing the backs to get clean ball to attack from and give the forwards targets in front of them to hit for quick recycle ball again to keep applying the pressure.

It was pleasing to see players carry with aggression and good leg drive going into contact.

In the 2nd half Curtin played better and at times put the boys under extreme pressure but the boys worked hard on defence and the only points that Curtin could score was a penalty kick.

All the boys played well and worked hard for each other and tries were scored by Craig Atthis (3), Mike furze, Dan Cassidy and Joel Lamatoa who also kicked 3 conversions. A performance in the right direction as finals loom but as a team we need to continue to work hard and grow as we have still not reached our potential."
