Very successful day for Champ B1 team

Southern Lions travelled to Perth Irish RUFC for the Champ B Round 3 clash.

Southern Lions were looking to improve from the tough match in round 2 against Mandurah and Perth Irish were in trouble from the start. The home side couldn't live with Southern Lions and lob-sided match was the result.

Southern Lions ran out easy winners outscoring Perth Irish by 9 tries to 1. The final score was 61-5.

Southern Lions co-coach Dan King provided the following summary of the game -

"It’s been a beautiful day for rugby and very pleased that the lads got the win today.

I think if we gave ourselves an honest assessment we were in control for most of the match as the score reflects but the Perth Irish boys did cause us a few problems and at times disrupted what we wanted to do. We are pretty happy but there is still improvements and things we need to sharpen up on at this week’s training ready for our next home game against Curtin Uni which will be our next test.

Fair play to the Irish they went hard and never gave up and they deserved their try. We were pretty deadly in their 22 and came away with quite a few scores and more importantly the bonus point win. It was good to see young Jayden Jacques go over for his first try of the season and he deserved his starting spot, he has been working at training and we wanted to take a look at him this week. There was some pretty good try’s scored and my play of the day was when Hami Henry sent a beautiful executed cross field quick to the arms of the veteran Junior Tairea to touch down in the corner to the delight of the Lions' players and supporters.

Things to work on would be our structure plays and also carry into contact as I don’t think we performed as well as we could have. The Irish lads turned over a few of our rucks. I think with the heat we got a little tired and lazy so we identified this and will action. However, there was heaps of positives and some things we worked on at training worked well in the game and that’s credit to the players.

I just hope the boys don’t eat too much chocolate over Easter and come back a bit heavier for the lead up to Curtin game! I’ll make sure Jak Terry and Tim Coffey are rationed as I know they have sweet tooths.

The bye weekend gives the boys a good chance to rest up and heal some knocks, I am confident we will be firing the week after."

Congratulations to the coaches and players on continuing the great start to the season.
