Southern Lionesses travelled to Kingsway Sports Complex to take on Wanneroo RUFC.
It was the first game in the 2017 Season with high hopes for the Lionesses to play Finals football.
Wanneroo RUFC has taken out the Grand Final in the last few seasons so are the THE team to beat.
Southern Lions were expecting a very tough game and so it turned out to be.
Southern Lions were short several experienced players, and with Shanice Parker now on a National 7s contract, they lost 0-42.
Southern Lions coach Kev Thornton provided the following summary of the game -
"A good start to the season in very warm conditions against strong opposition.
Congratulations to all the new girls playing their first game for the Lions, some playing their first game of rugby.
The game was played in great spirit by both sides. We competed well in all areas. Our defence at times was amazing, especially out wide and stopped certain tries being scored. The scoreline did not reflect the effort the girls put in.
Player of the day was a hard choice, but a great effort by Caitlin Burt-Poloai sees her get the award this week. Well done.
Thanks to all the supporters who traveled up to watch. I'm sure the positive cheers from the sideline lifted the girls.
What we need now is for everyone to get to training. 6.30pm sharp.
Halftime: 0-20
Full time : 0-42."
Hard Luck to the coach and players on a tough start to the season.
