Lionesses undone by illness and low numbers

Southern Lionesses travelled to take on Nedlands RUFC in this round 3 match. Nedlands were competing in the Women's competition for the first time in many years.

Both teams had won one and lost one in the opening two rounds.
Nedlands however proved too strong for the Lionesses on the day. Southern Lionesses had only 15 players and 3 of those were sick with the flu.

Nedlands ran out comfortable winners, scoring 8 tries and 2 conv to 1 try for Southern Lions.

Southern Lions coach Kev Thornton provided the following summary of the game -

"A disappointing loss by our ladies today at Nedlands.
With only minutes to go before kick off we were searching the sidelines for players. Lucky we managed to field enough or the call would have gone out to our Junior Club President who came a long to watch. I think Sam was keen to have a go.

Hopefully a valuable lesson was learnt today. The man in white, in this case orange, is all ways right, even when he is wrong. On most occasions he was right. We must learn to play what is in front of us and channel our energy in the right direction. A job that our player of the day, Char did very well.

When we decided to run hard, support one another and compete for the ball we played very well. Sadly those times were limited.
Nedlands were a strong side and had a full reserve bench. In the very hot conditions that was a luxury to have and they used it to their benefit. Our water runners were kept very busy all day.

There were some positives that came out of the game. Our first year players took another step in learning the game and gaining more knowledge by playing. They will all be better for the experience. All we need now is for more numbers, like everyone, to turn up to training so we can work on our skills and drills.

A big thanks to all the supporters who turned up. Keep coming along and being vocal, the players appreciate it.

Don't forget Ladies no game this weekend but we do have a board session and lunch on Friday.
From all the Lionesses a happy and safe Easter to you all."

Hard luck to the coaches and players. Let's hope the Easter break gets all players available again.
