Green shoots of progress for young Lionesses

Southern Lionesses travelled to take on Kalamunda RUFC in this Round 6 match. It was the first meeting of the sides in 2017.

Southern Lionesses were looking for an improvement from the last round against Wanneroo.

The Lionesses started brightly with a length of the field break by full back Melissa Thomas but unluckily she was brought to a halt 5m from the try line. It was a great start but unfortunately, Kalamunda came back hard and proved too strong for the Southern Lionessess' young players.

Southern Lions coach Kev Thornton provided the following summary of the game -

"The ladies traveled away to Kalamunda for today's game. It was very encouraging to see a good turn out of players which allowed us to field a full team with reserves.

Kalamunda started very strongly and dominated play after the near miss from our full back. Before our team could get their hands on the ball again the opposition had scored several tries and the score had blown out by halftime.

A few stern words at halftime by the coaches and captain to the team seemed to wake the girls up and they started the second spell strongly. We managed to hold our own ball and put some good backline moves together which lead to Cheyenne scoring the first try of the half. We competed well in the forwards with our player of the day Maria again showing improvement in only her third game. Well done.

The final score probably wasn't a true reflection of the difference between the two sides. We just need to start a bit stronger and get into the games earlier. Still a lot of encouraging signs for the coaching staff, especially the continued improvement from all the new players. Keep it up ladies.

Again a big thanks to all the supporters who turned up."

Hard luck to the coaches and players. We know the Ladies are capable of plenty of wins this year.
