Lionesses go down fighting

Wanneroo RUFC travelled to Southern Lions looking for a repeat of earlier wins in 2017.

Lionesses worked hard all game but injuries and low numbers resulted in Wanneroo pulling away in the second half.

Coach Kevin Thornton provided the following summary of the game -

"Ladies day at the club and the girls welcomed table leaders Wanneroo.

Again we struggled with numbers but by kick off we managed to field 15 players. As the game progressed two more turned up to strengthen our bench.
The final score was not a fair reflection on the effort our Ladies put in today. As usual our team captain Danielle lead the way with some strong running and huge tackles. This inspired some of our more experienced players in the forwards, like Tarnz, to follow and on many occasions we were very dominant around the field.
Our young back line again showed signs of improvement. Good strong running and nice passing allowed us to make several line breaks but the opposition were well drilled and covered very well in defence.
We lost our half back Celia early in the second half but our player of the day Mahinarangi Clair again showed how skillful she is buy filling in. Our first five Caitlin Burt-Poloai was gaining more confidence and running strongly when she went down with an ankle injury early in the second half as well. Our physio team were kept very busy all day.
With the amount of tackling we had to do and lack of reserves it was no surprise to see our girls just simply 'run out of puff ' late in the second half and the flood gates opened allowing Wanneroo to run in some late tries. To our credit though we never stopped trying and there were alot of very tired and sore bodies at the end.

Again a big thanks to our supporters who turned up and to Ria and all the ladies who made sure the evening was a huge success. I hope you all managed to get through Sunday OK.

Now lets all get down to training on Tuesday night."
