Revenge mission for agonising semi-final loss

Mandurah Pirates RUFC travelled to Southern Lions for a Champ A semi-final rematch.

Mandurah had defeated Southern Lions last August to deny the home team a place in the 2016 Grand Final.

Southern Lions were plotting a revenge mission in 2017.

It was a very open and high paced entertaining match with both sides having some success at different times in the match.
Southern Lions proved too strong in the forwards and their fast backs finished off some great team tries.

Southern Lions won 56-33 scoring 9 tries to 5 and with 4 successful conversions and 1 penalty.

Southern Lions coach Brett Fell provided the following summary of the game -

"The 1st team made it 2 from 2 with a convincing win 56 points to 33 over Mandurah. The team is showing some real qualities on attack with ball carriers looking to attack space to allow for excellent continuity through clear line breaks or off loads to their support players. This type of mindset is allowing for quick recycle ball and the ability to play the game at up-tempo speed. With the team scoring 9 tries in which majority were solid team tries the only real concern was the teams defence where we allowed 5 to be scored against us. It is only early days, but with more understanding of defensive structures and quality time spent in this area it is hoped that real improvements can be made. Again, all players worked hard with player of the day Vaka carrying the ball with real power and was supported very well by Mike Furze and Sam Toy. In the backs, midfield pairing of Beau Cassidy and Greg Jackson were solid and winger Joel Lamatoa played very well too"

Congratulations to the coach and players on continuing the great start to the season.
