Top of Table Clash

Curtin Uni RUFC travelled to Southern Lions for a Top of the Table clash in round 4. Both teams were looking to continue their fine start to the 2017 season.

Southern Lions dominated the first half scoring 4 tries & 3 conversions to 2 penalties. The 4th try came from a length of the field run from athletic lock Sam Toy and brilliantly supported & finished off by open-side Sam Price. Lions led 26-6 at the half.

The second half was a much tighter affair with Curtin Uni coming right back into it with two well worked tries. With 15mins to go the gap was reduced to 8 pts, 26-18. Southern Lions dug deep and repelled the Uni attacks. Southern Lions weren't happy without the bonus point and finished off strongly to score with the last play of the game.

Southern Lions winning 31-18 scoring 5 tries with 5 successful conversions to 2 tries, 1 conversion & 2 penalties.

Southern Lions coach Brett Fell provided the following summary of the game -

"Southern Lions 1st grade continued on their winning way last Saturday with a hard fought 31 points to 18 win over other unbeaten team Curtin Uni. Leading 26-6 at halftime laid a good foundation to push on in the 2nd half, but this unfortunately did not occur. Throughout the match the boys were unable to hold on to the the ball for long periods and apply pressure. This created a stop start affair with plenty of restarts and penalties throughout the match.
It was a game that will do the team no harm having to really dig deep right through to the 80th minute where they were able to score a 5th try and secure a bonus point. Moving forward there is plenty to work on if we wish to improve. Though all this Player of the Day Sam Toy produced an excellent performance especially with ball in and as was supported by fellow forwards Sione Takaula and Sam Price. In the backs, fullback Dane Jobe was solid and Mike Perkins was sound at 10.
This weeks game against Arks is an opportunity again to be better and to keep growing as a team."

Congratulations to the coach and players on continuing the great start to the season.
