Pirate Ship Sinks

Mandurah Pirates RUFC travelled to Southern Lions looking for revenge. The first meeting of the teams had been a high scoring affair with Lions coming out on top 56-33.

The Pirates were ready from the kick-off and attacked hard early on getting the first try of the game. The early shock kick started the home team and Lions ran in 3 tries before half time. The pick of the tries was a scything individual effort from centre Joel Lamatoa.

The second half continued in a similar vein to the first with Lions adding on 4 more tries to 2 from the Pirates to win 46-19.

Southern Lions coach Brett Fell provided the following summary of the game -

"Southern Lions 1st grade made it 9 from 9 defeating Mandurah 46 19. Played in pleasant conditions both teams attempted to run the ball which made for some entertaining rugby. For the first time this season the boys were down after Mandurah scored and converted early. Getting into their work the boys scored the next 3 tries to get to a 17-7 lead going into half time. Scoring first in the second half was important and the boys did this to stretch their lead further. Mandurah to their credit kept coming back until a couple of tries by the boys put the result to rest. The forward pack was powerful at set piece and laid a solid platform for the backs. Number 8 Craig Atthis played well with good carries and solid defence and was supported by lock Scott Turnbull, number 6 Mike Furze and prop Vaka. In the backs, the young midfield pairing of Joel Lamatoa and Sheldon Willan accepted the challenge well. Joel Lamatoa who was strong with ball in hand. 1st 5 Kyle Fell directed things well and set the outside backs away with some excellent long balls. Satisfying result a week before having this weekend off to freshen up for the run home."

Congratulations to the coach and players on continuing the great start to the season.
