Lions Belt-Up Pirates

Coach Brett Fell provided the following summary of the game -

"An early second half scoring blitz helped Southern Lions 1st grade to a convincing 46 points to 19 win over a spirited Mandurah side.
Played in overcast conditions the team started well scoring 2 excellent tries one which which was an outstanding back line play finished by Sheldon Willan to lead 12 nil.
At the kick off the boys relaxed and Mandurah found space and scored a smart try of their own to make the score 12 7. From the kick off Mandurah attacked deep into lions territory but some solid defence caused a turn over from which an 80 metre try was scored. It started with a great carry from Mike Smith followed by 4 of 5 offloads deep into Mandurah territory and from the ensuring ruck the ball was moved to the left flank where Dean Kingi was on hand to crash over in the corner to finish a wonderful move.

Turning around at half time 17 7 the game was still in the balance but the boys lifted the tempo, played the game at the right end of the field securing the early points required to make it difficult for Mandurah to come back. Play continued to move up and down the field with both teams keen to use the ball and challenge the defence. Mandurah scored 2 tries of their own while Southern Lions dotted down 3 more times to complete the scoring. Player of the day Joel Lamatoa showed real qualities on attack being a threat each time he received the ball and displayed an excellent work rate. He was supported by fullback Dane Jobe and fellow winger Sheldon Willan who both work well off the ball and got themselves into space well. Up front Mike Furze was excellent with his defence being outstanding and was well supported by number 8 Craig Atthis who worked hard and open side flanker Dean Kingi. A pleasing result as we move towards crunch time."
